[1] This rectangular marble base is a fourth-century choregic dedication commemorating a victory in a dithyrambic competition, probably at the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475, with notes). The dedication seems to have been originally composed of two stones. The text will have been completed on the block to the right. On the upper surface there are traces of holes for the attachment of the tripod. IG II³ ascribed the dedication to the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes), due to its apparent findspot at the Theatre of Dionysos, but subsequent research shows that it was originally found near the Ilissos River (A. P. Matthaiou, Grammateion 7, 2018, 81-84 = SEG 68.83). The surviving text is consistent with the Thargelia (cf. A. P. Matthaiou, in Epainos Luigi Beschi, 2011, 262, 267; the key difference was that choregoi for the Thargelia represented two tribes instead of one, cf. IG II³ 4, 475, with notes). Even though parts of the text are missing, it is likely that Pythodoros, who is otherwise unknown, was the sponsor (choregos) because he is commemorated before the director and the pipe-player (cf. IG II³ 4, 441, with note).
