[1] There is an irregular depression on the upper surface for a marble statue of Salamis or Theogenes. In myth, the nymph Salamis was daughter of the river Asopos and great-grandmother of Ajax (Diod. 4.76; Paus. 5.11.5). From what is known of the men listed, the monument would seem to date shortly before the seizure of Salamis by the Macedonians in 317. [2] It is not clear whether this inscription demonstrates that there was a permanent cavalry force on Salamis or a temporary garrison during the Lamian War or Kassandros’ invasion of 318 (Diod. 18.69.2, cf. G. R. Bugh, The Horsemen of Athens, 1988, 212-13). Although drawn from a number of different demes, several of the dedicants’ families seem to have had longstanding connections to Salamis. A female relative of Nikias (l. 5) and Euktaios (l. 20) was buried on the island (IG II² 6930). The father of Epikrates (l. 25) had rented a house on Salamis, for which the father of Nausikles (l. 10) was one of the guarantors (IG II² 1590a); he was subsequently buried on the island (SEG 25.260). These connections make it highly likely that, whether this was a permanent or emergency cavalry force, it was composed of local recruits (M. C. Taylor, Salamis and the Salaminioi, 1997, 150‒58). [3] The lower part of the inscription has been erased; it would have had space for up to eighty more names.
