[1] This marble plaque is part of a series of dedications by Athenian archons to Apollo Below the Long Rocks (Hypo Makrais). For details, see IG II³ 4, 128. [2] Q. Trebellius Rufus was a Roman knight (eques) from Tolosa in Gallia Narbonensis (modern Toulouse), where he rose to be the first High Priest of Gallia Narbonensis. He held the archonship in Athens between 87/88-95/96 AD, possibly in 91/92 AD (S. Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens, 507, but see J. L. Shear, ZPE 180, 2012, 165-167), and was honoured by the Athenians with citizenship and extensive further honours (cf. IG II² 4193, Agora XVIII 398; N. Cecconi, Historia 72, 2023, 204-5). [3] The "board" (synedrion) is that of the court presidents (thesmothetai). They had a secretary, but not assistants (paredroi) like the other three archons (Ath. Pol. 55.1, 59.7; Hyp. 3.6; Pollux 8.92, IG II³ 4, 42). The fact that the secretary is included in the dedication to Apollo Hypo Makrais may indicate that he was admitted to the Areopagos at the end of his tenure, just like the other archons. The secretary also makes dedications to Apollo Hypo Makrais in IG II³ 4, 139, 144 (?), 170, 202, and is also honoured in IG II² 3744 and SEG 18.53. [4] Perhaps chairman of the board of thesmothetai.
