[1] This is a base of Hymettan marble, consisting of two contiguous blocks. The dedicator belongs to the prominent Kallias-Hipponikos family, which held the hereditary sacred office of dadouch ('torchbearer') in the Eleusinian Mysteries (see K. Clinton, The Sacred Officials of the Eleusinian Mysteries, 1974, 47–48 and D. Lewis, Annual of the British School at Athens 50, 1955, 13–14 with literature).
