[1] This marble votive relief, depicting the god Herakles holding up a palm in each hand, was discovered near the area of the ancient deme of Acharnai (but also in proximity to the deme of Cholargos) with several votive plaques dedicated to Herakles and a catalogue of members of an association of worshippers of Herakles (SEG 54.235). It was dedicated by a man named Niketion, maybe an Athenian (Byrne, Athenian Onomasticon). The cult of Herakles in Acharnai is mentioned by Pausanias (1.31.6). A Roman date is proposed by Papazarkadas (SEG 54.323) on linguistic grounds (the diphthong EI in the dedicant’s name and the absence of adscript iotas) and because il was found with SEG 54.235 (1st century BC-1st century AD). On the chronology, see also E. Vanderpool, AJA 64 (1960), 269.

The epithet epekoos, meaning “the listener” for a recipient deity is quite common in Attica: see IG II³ 4, 886, 934, 1104, 1348, 1417, 1555, 1557.
