[1] This stone was used no less than four times. In its first use in iii BC honorific texts were inscribed on what is now the lower moulding and within crowns on what is now the left side (SEG 21.738, cf. SEG 23.110). What is now the underside of the monument carries an oval cavity, relating to its function as a base in this first use. The inscriptions printed above relate to the second use of the stone, in which it was turned over. On the top of the monument (previously the bottom), a rectangular cavity indicates that it supported a votive in this second use. A third dedicatory inscription was then inscribed on what is now the back. The fourth text, “to Demosthenes of Paiania” (Δημοσθέν[ει] | Παιανιεῖ) was inscribed over ll. 3-4 in the Roman period (SEG 21.772). All the inscriptions were lightly erased. [2] The names in ll. 4-7 were apparently added later. They were perhaps the polemarch’s deputies, cf. IG II³ 4, 42; IG II³ 4, 112. Herakleitos of Ikarion is known as a contributor on behalf of himself, his wife and sons on IG II² 2334, l. 6 (mid-ii BC).
