[1] This inscription is carved on the base of marble statue of an eagle, which was found in the Agora and probably derives from the City Eleusinion (on which see AIUK 4.1 (BM: Cult Provisions), no. 1 with notes and Agora XXXI). It was found reused as building material in the nearby Post-Herulian Wall, not far from IG II ³ 4, 997 (T. Shear, Hesperia 8, 1939, 207).

Eagles were usually associated with Zeus, but, as Kore’s father and Demeter’s brother, he plays a vital role in the myth of Kore’s abduction, which could explain the decision to dedicate this eagle statue to the two goddesses. For an eagle statue dedicated to Zeus see IG II³ 4 1250. The dedicator is not otherwise known, but his name indicates a date in or after the reign of Trajan (98-117 AD).
