[1] This is a dedicatory inscription on an altar found at the City Eleusinion (see AIUK 4.1 (BM: Cult Provisions) no. 1 and Agora XXXI). The altar is decorated with a cymatium above the inscription and a bull's skull with floral garlands below. The top surface of the altar has the form of an incense burner. The altar was dedicated to the goddesses by Dionysia, who is named as a temple attendant (zakoros) in the inscription. This office is attested for many other cults from Mycenaean times onwards and probably originally meant ‘building-sweeper’ (D. Olson, Glotta 98, 2022, 206), but it is not otherwise attested in connection with the Eleusinian cult.
