[1] This is a second-century AD base for a statue of the fourth-century BC orator Demosthenes. The statue does not survive, but it was probably a version of the early-third-century BC sculpture by Polyeuktos which is known from several copies (images on Commons). The base was found in the Asklepieion on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665 with notes). Several Imperial-period honorific monuments for authors, rhetors, and philosophers have been found in this sanctuary, but this seems to be the only example for a Classical figure.
