A mother erects a statue of her son

IG II² 3962 Date: 212 – ca. 250 AD

In accordance with the petition (eperōtēma) to the most awesome Council of the 500, Firmania (5) Eugamia Serapias, having made the request, erected (this image of) Firmanius Aigialos, her own offspring,^[1] (10) the temple attendant (zakoreuontos) being Aurelius Dionysodoros son of Hermeias of Melite.^[2]

[1] This base was probably originally erected in sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). The honorand and dedicator are not otherwise known; they were perhaps not Athenian citizens. The inscription seems to post-date the extension of Roman citizenship to all free people of the empire in 212 AD (Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens, 542). The base was reused as building material for the Beulé Gate at the west end of the Acropolis, which was part of the post-Herulian Wall built in the late third century AD. It remains in situ there. Most of the material for this gate was taken from the choregic monument of Nikias (see IG II³ 4, 467), which was just below the sanctuary of Asklepios. [2] On the temple attendant (zakoros), see IG II³ 4, 794. There are two holes on top for the feet of a bronze statue.
