Honours for P. Aelius Dionysodoros

IG II² 3579 Date: 124-mid-3rd century AD

With good fortune, In accordance with their decisions, the most awesome Council of the 500 (erected this statue) of the (5) the allotted (klērōton) priest of the Saviour Asklepios, Publius Aelius Dionysodoros of Acharnai on account of his excellence (10) and piety towards the god.^[1]

[1] This herm honoured a priest of the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). The identification of the priest as "allotted" is the only firm evidence that the priests of Asklepios continued to be selected by lot after the post became a life-time priesthood in the Augustan period (see IG II³ 4, 797 with note; on the selection of priests by lot, see J. Blok and S. D. Lambert, ZPE 169, 2009, 96-99). The stone was found in the south wall of the Acropolis fortress, not far from the Asklepieion.
