(This statue of) Emperor Tiberius Caesar the God Augustus, son of the Gods Augusti was dedicated by Publius Occius Anteros and Ariston son of Teimoxenos of Pagai, (5) just as Ariston (son of Ariston) of Pagai instructed them in his will (diathēkē).

[1] This plaque seems to have been mounted on the front of the base of a statue of the emperor Tiberius (r. 14 – 37 AD). The "Gods Augusti" are Tiberius' stepfather / adoptive father Augustus and his mother Livia (cf. S. Zoumbaki and L. G. Mendoni in L. G. Mendoni and A. I. Mazarakis Ainan, Kea-Kythnos: History and Archaeology, 1998, 669-74). On Tiberius, see Agora XVIII 253 with notes.

It is now in the Epigraphical Museum in Athens and was included in Kirchner's corpus of Athenian inscriptions, IG II², but was originally found at Pagai, west of Megara (M. Rayet, BCH 4, 1888, 66-67) and presumably originally stood there. The erection of the statue was funded by a donation in the will of Ariston from Pagai. Publius Occius Anteros and Ariston son of Teimoxenos are the deceased's heirs; the latter is perhaps a nephew. Neither is otherwise attested, but a Publius Occius P. f. Crispus dedicates a statue of Nero's empress in IG II² 3280. Statues erected in accordance with the will of a deceased individual ('ex testamento portraits') are attested from the fourth century BC onwards; see J. Ma, Statues and Cities, 2013, 175-77.
