[1] This is the base for a statue of Drusus the Elder, stepson of Augustus, younger brother of the future emperor Tiberius, and father of Germanicus and the future emperor Claudius. It is unclear how he had acted as a benefactor to Athens. Agora XVIII 252 mentions that his ancestors, the Claudii Nerones and Claudii Pulchri had ties to Athens. When he died in 9 BC, the Athenians established a priesthood of "Consul Drusus", which was held concurrently with the eponymous archonship until the early second century AD (the name of the priesthood refers to the fact that he was consul at the time of his death). The earliest reference to the priesthood is IG II² 1722, ll. 1-3 (shortly after 9 BC) and the latest is IG II² 3589 (104/5 AD). For more on this priesthood and a full list of attestations, see F.
