[1] This is the earliest of the few inscriptions on bronze that survive from ancient Athens. The early date is indicated by the presence of qoppa and the letter forms (cf. on IG I³ 507). It is also the earliest epigraphical reference to the treasurers of Athena, perhaps at this time eight in number, two from each of the four pre-Cleisthenic tribes (according to Ath. Pol. 4, 7.3, 8.1 they already existed at the time of Solon, who legislated that they be chosen from the wealthiest class, the pentakosiomedimnoi). This dedicatory inscription, itself in bronze, records the “collection” (and perhaps, implicitly, inventorising) of bronze objects on the acropolis. Compare the dedication of bronze stelai on the acropolis by the treasurers at the end of the 5th cent. BC, IG II² 1498, 3-22 (on which see E. Kosmetatou, Tyche 18, 2003, 33-45). On this inscription as early evidence for archival practices at Athens, cf. J. P. Sickinger, Public Records and Archives in Classical Athens (1999), 39-40. Andokides (l. 4) was perhaps an ancestor of the the orator Andokides (cf. J. K. Davies, Athenian Propertied Families, 1971, pp. 27-28).
