[1] Textual note: There are traces of individual letters in the first line before 'of Herakles', which is itself partially restored. A personal name or "Herakleioi" have been suggested as alternative restorations for "of Herakles."

This base (or possibly an altar) was found in the vicinity of the Piraeus, in the Kaminia or Varika area (Palaios, Polemon 1, 1929, 107). R. Parker suggested that the offering was made in the shrine of Herakles at Phaleron (Athenian Religion, 1996, 322 and 334). This dedication was made by a religious association (thiasos) "of" the Etionidai, which ought to be the name of a genos or phratry or similar. This dedication may have been made by a thiasos of Herakles drawn from or associated with the Etionidai (on thiasoi of Herakles see IG II² 2345, with notes). Their name might be linked with Eetioneia, the northern side of the Piraeus harbour near where the base was found and/or various mythological figures called Eetion.
