[1] This very fragmentary base from Eleusis bore a statue of Marcus Ulpius Eubiotos Leuros, a benefactor honoured by decrees of the Areopagos, Council and People around 230 AD (on whom, see SEG 30.82 with notes). That decree did not provide for the erection of any statues at Eleusis, so this base must have been erected separately, perhaps by a client (cf. IG II² 3702-3703). The inscription appears to take the form of a dedication to Athena Polias (l. 3), Demeter, and the Girl (l. 12). "The most brilliant" (lamprotatos) translates the Latin status designation vir clarissimus to which Roman senators were entitled. The hierophant named in l. 4 might have given permission for the statue's erection. The remnants of ll. 5-7, especially the indentation of l. 6, suggest an epigram.
