[1] This fragment of the late-1st century AD was among the inscriptions acquired in Athens by Lord Elgin (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). It belongs to a catalogue of ephebes, the young men of the city who undertook a year of official training, a genre of inscription of which there are three other examples in the British Museum dating from the Roman imperial period (see AIUK 4.3B no. 3, 4, 5). To the left is preserved part of a list of the permanent ephebic staff (the kestrophylax was a trainer in the use of a type of sling for firing missiles). To the right there is a relief of an ephebe in the process of crowning someone, who we can infer from other examples of this type of monument was probably the kosmetes, the ephebic superintendent. On the stele underneath this relief panel there will have been a catalogue of the ephebes.
