For Good Fortune. In the archonship of Xenagoras at Delphi and of Apolexis son of Philokrates at Athens,^[1] the following held the bull-first Dodekais:^[2] the priest of Apollo Pythios and Patroos^[3] Eukles son of Herodes of Marathon, the interpreter (5)chosen by the Pythian oracle (exēgētēs puthochrēstos) from among the Eupatridai Polykritos son of Polycharmos of Azenia, the interpreter (exēgētēs) elected from among the Eupatridai by the People Diotimos son of Diodoros of Halai, the herald of the god from the genos of the Kerykes and priest of Hermes Gorgippos son of Eudemos of Melite, the sacred remembrancer (hieromnēmōn) Theogenes son of Theogenes but by birth son [of Alexandros] (10)of Eupyridai, the seer (mantis) Aristos son of Ammonios of La[mptrai], the pipe-player Menodoros son of Menodoros of Pambotadai.^[4]

This inscription is a list of participants in the fifth and final Augustan Dodekais (on which, see F.Delphes III 2, 59 with notes), inscribed on the southern wall of the Athenian Treasury in the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. The archonships of Xenagoras at Delphi and of Apolexis son of Philokrates at Athens cannot precisely be dated. S. Follet, Topoi 8, 1998, 253 dates the inscription to 13/2-9/8 BC; Byrne, Roman Citizens dates it to 8-1 BC; and G. Schmalz, Augustan and Julio-Claudian Athens, 238 to 17/6 BC, based on his reading of Ap[olexis] in the archon list, IG II² 1713, l. 25. [2] The inscription gives the Dodekais the epithet πρωτορθιαν ('first-straight'?) which makes little sense. Colin in F.Delphes corrected it to the hapax legomenon πρωτο<βο>ίαν (literally ‘bull-first’) which he takes to be a synonym for βούπρωρον (‘bull-headed’), a term used in the Domitianic Dodekais inscriptions (F.Delphes III 2, 65-66), which refers to a sacrifice of a bull followed by other animals. Thus, a ‘bull-first’ or ‘bull-headed’ Dodekais would be a sacrifice of a bull followed by eleven sheep or goats (cf. F.Delphes III 2, 59, with notes). [3] The cults of Apollo Pythios and of Apollo Patroos were linked to two different sanctuaries (cf. Travlos, Pictorial Dictionary, 1971, 96-103) and led by two separate priests (cf. Follet, Topoi 8, 1998, 255, n. 53), but the line between them could become blurred (cf. SEG 21.469, ll. 9, 52-55 with R. Cromey, L’Antiquité Classique 75, 2006, 43-49). Eukles' possession of both roles reflects the increasing social and political prestige of priesthoods in the late first century BC (see I Eleusis 300 with notes). The sacred remembrancer (hieromnemon, see F.Delphes III 2, 59 with notes), Theogenes son of Theogenes by birth son of Alexandros of Eupyridai, was also treasurer of the military fund (tamias ton stratiotikon) around 20 BC (see Agora XV 293, ll. 100-106).
