[1] On choregic dedications commemorating victories in competitions staged at deme festivals of Dionysos ("Rural Dionysia") see IG II³ 4, 498, with notes; in general on the Rural Dionysia at Rhamnous, IG II³ 4, 969. This is one of two extant dedications from Rhamnous commemorating victories in comedy. IG II³ 4, 513, commemorating a victory by Megakles son of Megakles of Rhamnous, is, as commonly, a statue base. In contrast, this dedication was inscribed on a series of thrones used for preferential seating (proedria) in the theatre at Rhamnous. Only the final throne has ever been seen (and is long-since lost) and was inscribed with the text given in "col. 3" of our translation, i.e. "Of Rhamnous | in comedy." From another sequence of thrones from this theatre, IG II³ 4, 969, it is apparent that the dedicatory text ran across a number of thrones, and Petrakos suggests that our throne will have been preceded by two adjacent ones containing the rest of our text, as given in "col. 1" and "col. 2" of our translation. In I Rhamnous he suggests that the dedicator of the thrones might have been the same Megakles who dedicated IG II³ 4, 513, but, as Csapo and Wilson point out, the dedicator in this case may have been another man.
