[1] This is a fragment of a public document, probably recording or referring to an interstate agreement. Its provenance is unknown, but its physical appearance and use of terminology suggests that it is from a decree of the Athenian Assembly, and that it dates to the middle of the fourth century BC. Symbolas, if correctly restored in l. 2, is probably used in a technical sense, referring to a judicial convention which set out the legal processes which would be applied in cases involving citizens of two different city-states (cf. IG II² 46, l. 38). It is not known how this inscription came to be at Chatsworth. Cf. AIUK 7, no. 1 and AIUK 7, no. 2, with notes. [2] The “agreement” (suntheke) is probably a reference to a treaty.
