[1] A "guard ship" (phylakis) was a fast boat used for surveillance, escort, and pursuits (e.g. Diod. Sic. 20.16.4-5, 20.93). The "triple-one-and-a-half" (trihemiolia) was a specific type of guard ship, which combined the size of a trireme with the layout of a hemiolia (Casson, JHS 78, 1958, 14-18). The latter seems to have had two rows of oars from the bow to midship and only one row from midship to stern, an arrangement which allowed for greater manoeuvrability, and was typically associated with pirates (Theoph. Char. 25.2, Phot. 167 s.v. hemiolia). The trihemiolia is attested in the Rhodian navy in 305/4 BC (Diodoros 20.93.2-3), and in the Ptolemaic, Antigonid, and Attalid navies from the mid-third century (P. Lond. 1.106, Athen. Deip. 5.203; Polyb. 16.7). This inscription is its earliest attestation in the Athenian navy; for later attestations, see I Délos 1508, IG II² 3218, 3494. [2] The date of this archon uncertain. Tracy, ALC 53, 74, attributes the inscription to the "Cutter of IG II² 913", active 210/9‒171/0 BC.
