[1] This funerary inscription for Zopyros is engraved within a tabula ansata over an earlier erased text. A relief loutrophoros beneath belongs to the earlier (likely Hellenistic) phase, marking out (at least) the original deceased as unmarried. A graffito of a cuirass and a palm branch incised on the back of the kioniskos perhaps signifies an athletic victory or military association (see Grossman, Agora XXXV 381). A deep cutting across the top of the monument may have held an offering. The orthography and the cursive letter forms with lunate sigma and cursive omega suggest a date in the 2^nd or 3^rd centuries AD.

The kioniskos was excavated just north of Kotzias Square in the cemetery on modern Aiolou street that lines the road leading north from the so-called 'Acharnian' gate in the northern section of the city walls (Mapping Ancient Athens, no. 1469, A. M. Theocharaki, The Ancient Circuit Walls of Athens, Berlin 2020, 252). IG II² 6404 and 9484 were also found here. On kioniskoi, see AIUK 3 (Fitzwilliam), no. 7, with notes.
