[1] This was a dedication by the prytany of Hippothontis, which had won the competition for the best prytany in its year in office, cf. IG I³ 515, with notes. The wording was apparently slightly different from other prytany dedications of this period, see e.g. IG II³ 4, 43, 44, 45. There was probably no difference of substance, however. Other dedications of this type were probably erected in the relevant tribal sanctuary. The sanctuary of Hippothoon has not been located; if, as is usually thought, it was in Eleusis (cf. IG II³ 4, 220 with notes), it seems the tribe must have used some other location in Athens for this dedication.
