[1] This is a dedication by the prytany of Kekropis, which had been awarded the prize for the best prytany in its year in office, as IG I³ 515 (Erechtheis). Like that one, it will have been set up in the sanctuary of the relevant tribal hero, Kekrops, on the Acropolis (cf. U. Kron, Die zehn attischen Phylenheroen, 1976, 87-89, 101-2, 262 K33). Unlike that one, this dedication is not in the form of a base carrying a votive statue, but a stele crowned with a relief, which portrays the lower parts of a standing Athena resting on her shield; to her right Nike, crowning a male figure who represents the prytaneis; in the background a three-handled water vessel (hydria), perhaps representing their prize. The restored width of the inscription suggests that there was space on the right for another figure, possibly Kekrops. In this case the demes seem to be listed in three columns corresponding to the inland trittys (col. 1), the coastal trittys (col. 2) and the urban trittys (col. 3) of the tribe (cf. J. Traill, Demos and Trittys, 1986, 134-36). The ascription of this text to Tracy's prolific "Cutter of IG II² 17", who was active ca. 414/3-386/5, suggests a date at the high end of the range, 390-360 BC, suggested by Meritt and Traill (ca. 375-350, IG).
