[1] This is a now-lost choregic dedication commemorating a victory in the dithyrambic competition, most likely at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes). The demotic of the sponsor (choregos) indicates that the victorious tribe was Hippothontis. The director was perhaps a native of Skarpheia, an eastern Lokrian city (probably in the plain of Moros, cf. Hansen and Nielsen, eds., Inventory of Archaic and Classical Greek Poleis, 2004, 387; IG IX I², 5 p. 112). Two other authors are known from Skarpheia: the comic playwright Lykon (Stephanis, Dionysiakoi Technitai 1988, no. 1567), two-time winner at the Lenaia (cf. IG II² 2325, l. 195) and a friend of Alexander the Great (Arr. An. 3.1.4; Plut. Mor. 334f., Alex. 29.3), and the poet Philodamos (cf. Syll.³ 270 in 339/8 BC).
