Decree of Rhamnous honouring Kallippos of Melite

The Rhamnousians decided; Hieropoios proposed:^[1] to praise Kallippos son of Theodotos of Melite and crown him with a gold crown for his manly virtue (andragathias) and justice towards the deme of the Rhamnousians, because he (5) managed the defences (phulakēs) well and justly; and he shall have priority seating (proedrian) at the Dionysia; and the herald shall announce the decree at the competition of the [Neme]sia or [Diony]sia; and the religious officials (hieropoious) shall inscribe it and stand it in the sanctuary of Nemesis.^[2]

[1] Textual Note. AIO follows the text of I Rhamnous except in 7, where the usual restoration is [Διονυσ]ίων, but Κnoepfler has raised the possible alternative, [Νεμεσ]ίων.

First edited by E. Mastrokostas, Praktika 1958, 32 (= SEG 22.120), this seems to be one of the earliest decrees at Rhamnous honouring a military commander (-ο for -ου in l. 1 pulls towards a 4th cent. date; earlier eds. dated it to mid-iii BC). Knoepfler notes (49) that there is no decree of the deme or other group from Rhamnous honouring a phrourarch (thus Knoepfler) or general (previous eds.) at Rhamnous before 307, and perhaps not before 304 BC. He would date this decree to Kassandros' attacks on Attica in the years up to 301 BC or the first attempts of Demetrios Poliorketes to regain control of the fortresses of Rhamnous and Eleusis (297-5 BC, Knoepfler 206). There is no other evidence for the honorand. [2] The sanctuary of Nemesis was a common location for the erection of decrees, especially of the deme (Knoepfler, 30). Earlier eds. restored the announcement at the Dionysia (l. 7), but Knoepfler suggests the Nemesia (178 n. 468; for competitions at this festival see I Rhamnous 7, ll. 8-9, gymnastic contest, I Rhamnous 98, ephebic torch race).
