[1] Textual Note. We follow Woodhead in Agora XVI, but omit the restored references to Melite in ll. 2 and 3. δεδόχθαι μ[ὲν ("it was decided on the one hand ...", Meritt = SEG 25.110) would be unexpected.

This is a fragment of what appears to have been a substantial monument, preserving the beginning of a decree. It is probably not a state decree; as Woodhead noted, the abbreviated prescript and the initial M following δεδόχθαι in l. 3 suggest that a group beginning with M was responsible. The date is determined by Tracy's identification of the hand as that of the "Cutter of IG II² 913", whose dated inscriptions fall between 214/3 and 171/0 BC (for the range see Tracy, Horos 26-31, 2014-2019, 46). Woodhead's suggestion that the group responsible was the deme Melite is not impossible (cf. AIO 2841 for a 2nd-cent. BC decree probably of this deme); but this would be unique or nearly-unique as an Attic deme decree datable to 215-170 BC (AIO 2841 and I Eleusis 229 are more comfortably dated after Athens' reacquisition of Delos in 166 BC); and our inscription might easily be the product of a named group other than a deme (e.g. Medontidai, Mesogeioi etc., cf. e.g. IG II² 1247, l. 10).
