[1] This egg-shaped Pentelic marble stone is very similar to IG II³ 4, 1160. It may have been the upper part of a votive relief that is now lost (E. Tagalidou, Weihreliefs an Herakles aus klassischer Zeit (1993), 202–203, Nr. 14) or planned from the start as a dedication without a relief; see M. C. Monaco, Halirrhothios (2015), 141. This inscription may originate from a hypothetical sanctuary of Herakles situated on the south slope of Acropolis (see IG II³ 4, 1157 with notes), but since its findspot is totally unknown (Monaco 2015, 141), its original location is unreconstructable. The dedicator is mentioned only by name, without a patronymic or demotic, so might be a freedman or a slave; see Monaco 2015, 141. Xenis could be a male or female name, cf. LGPN.
