[1] The first line, rather damaged, contains an invocation of the gods. Its letters were probably spread out more than letters in subsequent lines. Such an invocation is normally seen on decrees and is unusual for dedications. See R. Van Hove, Kernos 36, 2023, 61–112 and, for more details, M. C. Monaco, Halirrhothios (2015), 138. [2] This base of Hymettan marble was found on the south slope of the Acropolis. The findspot of this dedication may suggest that Herakles was either worshipped within the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Athens, or that the deity had a separate sanctuary nearby, see R. Parker, Polytheism and Society at Athens (2007), 412, n. 100 and C. L. Lawton, Votive Reliefs (2017), 83. Other dedications to Herakles have also been discovered on the south slope of the Acropolis, see IG II³ 4, 1159 with notes. Herakles was closely associated with Athena and was often portrayed in architectural sculpture of the Acropolis (cf. M. W. Padilla, The Myths of Herakles in Ancient Greece, 1998, 10–15). [3] Votive inscriptions were usually dated by priests, not by civic officials as here (l. 4). This line may have been written by a different hand.
