[1] This columnar grave marker (kioniskos) is located on Philopappos Hill, outside the church of Agios Demetrios Loumbardiaris on the Koile Road. On kioniskoi, see AIUK 3 (Fitzwilliam), no. 7 with notes. It attests to the marriage of an Athenian citizen to a "Milesian" woman. In the Imperial period, Milesians appear frequently in Athenian inscriptions. They were probably not actually people from from Miletos but rather a category of privileged non-citizens, perhaps the freed slaves or illegitimate children of citizens (see AIUK (BSA), no. 13 and AIO Papers 12, sect. 4.1). The location of the deme Aithaliadai is uncertain.
