[1] On the deme Halai Aixonides and its inscriptions see RO 46, with notes. This inscription was found at the sanctuary of Apollo Zoster in the deme. What survives seems to be the citation from the bottom of a stele (?) that would perhaps have been inscribed higher up with the text of one or more decrees honouring Eukles, apparently a successor of Polystratos, who was honoured as priest of Apollo Zoster in RO 46. The name Eukles occurs in a well-known family of Halai Aixonides, to which this priest probably belonged, see IG II³ 4, 223 l. 15, with note 9. The Council of 500 exercised oversight over all Attic cults and it is no particular surprise to find it honouring a priest (cf. IG II³ 1, 1189, IG II² 1362). Whether it was associated in those honours with the Demos = the Athenian Assembly, or the Demos = deme Halai Aixonides is unclear. The former is not impossible given the status of the cult of Apollo Zoster as a "polis" cult (cf. RO 46 n. 2). [2] So far as can be judged from the photograph published by Kourouniotes, the unexplained "E" which he reads below the inscription might be an accidental mark made by a three-pronged chisel rather than a letter; it appears shallow and slanted and there is no apparent trace of a vertical hasta; we have not seen the stone [Schuddeboom].
