For good fortune. In the archonship of Dionysios son of Dionysios of Acharnai the Paianistai of Asklepios (5) Mounichios,^[1] having petitioned (entuchontes) the mighty curator (logistēi) of the most splendid city of Athens, Gaius Licinnius Telemachos,^[2] as instructed by the god himself through Aurelius Isidoros the priest,^[3] we have appended (10) [the answer given by the mighty?] [curator?] . . . . . .

[1] “Paianistai” performed choral paians, and all those known from Athens were devotees of Asklepios (see S. B. Aleshire, Asklepios at Athens, 1991, 38-39). This inscription is variously dated 211/2 AD (IG³), 212/3 AD (IG²), 215/6 AD (Byrne, RCA 537). The same archon dates the ephebic catalogue, IG II² 2208, l. 9, which, to judge by the prevalence in it of the name “Aurelius”, shortly postdates the edict of Caracalla granting all inhabitants of the Roman Empire the Roman citizenship (the “Constitutio Antoniniana”, 212 AD). [2] The curator rei publicae (in Greek logistes) was appointed by the emperor to oversee specific financial and/or religious matters abroad. The post was possibly introduced towards the end of the first century AD, although most evidence for it dates to after the reign of Trajan. Gaius Licinnius Telemachos had already held this office ca. 209 AD (IG II² 1077, ll. 32-34), so he was either in post continuously for a period of several years or was nominated for a second time (see F. Camia, Mélanges de l’École Française de Rome 119/2, 2007, 410-11). [3] Probably the same priest as on IG II² 2482, l. 7. It is implied that the Paianistai had consulted the oracle at Delphi.
