[1] This rectangular marble base is a fourth-century choregic dedication commemorating a victory in the dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes), or perhaps (if there were two tribes) the Thargelia (for the latter possibility cf. A. P. Matthaiou, in Epainos Luigi Beschi, 2011, 262, 267). On the upper surface, there are traces of holes for the attachment of the tripod. The demotic of the sponsor (choregos) implies that the victorious tribe was Hippothontis.
