[1] The term “Milesian” at Athens appears in late Hellenistic and Roman times to have indicated some status category such as freedmen or illegitimate offspring (cf. AIUK 2 (BSA), no. 13). Five of the ten women named Epikarpia known at Athens are “Milesians”, but the name is not attested at Miletos itself, which supports the notion that this is a status category rather than a genuine ethnic in later Hellenistic and Roman Athens.
