[1] This funerary kioniskos commemorates Demetria, who may in fact not be from Miletos since “Milesian” at Athens appears in later Hellenistic and Roman times to have indicated some status category such as freedmen or illegitimate offspring (cf. AIUK 2 (BSA), no. 13). Her father’s name, Akratos, is found only three other times at Athens, two of them foreign residents from Syrian Antioch, not far from her husband Antipatros' place of origin, Phoenician Berytos (modern Beirut, Lebanon).

A relief loutrophoros on the right side of the kioniskos is presumably from another use of the monument, since this motif usually indicates that the deceased was unmarried (cf. AIUK 3 (Fitzwilliam), no. 5).

The stone was excavated just north of Kotzias Square in the cemetery on modern Aiolou street that lines the road leading north from the so-called 'Acharnian' gate in the northern section of the city walls (Mapping Ancient Athens, no. 1469, A.
