[1] This funerary kioniskos commemorates Theodoros from the city of Marisa (Maresha), a Judean and Idumaean settlement in the foothills of the Judean mountains in modern Israel, known for its rock-cut tombs and mixed Greek-Semitic population. Both father and son are called Theodoros, which was a very common Greek name but also particularly favoured as a Greek name by Hellenistic and Roman-period Jews, because it had no pagan undertones. The pair are the only attested foreign residents of Marisa in at Athens. The lettering suggests a first century AD date, but Marisa was destroyed in 40 BC (Joseph. Ant. Jud. 14.364), so it is possible that this inscription should be re-dated to the first century BC. On kioniskoi, see AIUK 3 (Fitzwilliam), no. 7, with notes.
