[1] This is one of numerous Athenian decrees of the 330s and 320s BC honouring grain traders. On decrees of this type and their rationale see IG II³ 1, 367, IG II³ 1, 432, with notes. For a text, English translation and discussion of the decree see D. T. Engen, Honor and Profit, 2010, pp. 272, 314-17, D25. Proposed by the prominent politician Demades (on whom cf. IG II³ 1 322, IALD II, pp. 171-226), it is a work of Tracy's "Cutter of IG II² 1262", who was active ca. 320 – ca. 296 BC (ADT, 138). Since Demades was executed on the orders of Kassandros in 319 BC (Diod. 18.48.3), the decree can be dated towards the end of Demades' career, probably ca. 320-319 BC. The decree is significant as evidence that Demades, like his rival Lykourgos (proposer of IG II³ 1, 432) engaged in this way in the politics of the grain trade (for another example of such a decree possibly proposed by Demades, see IG II² 398a + 438 = SEG 40.78 = Osborne, Naturalization D40 = Engen, pp. 268-69, 311-12, D22. On the rivalry between these politicians see AIO Papers 6, pp. 6-12). [2] Typically of the decrees of this period honouring grain-traders, the honorand is known only from the evidence of this decree, from which it is clear, however, that he had been honoured previously by the Athenians with a grant of proxeny (l. 11, for similar services?). The honorand had perhaps rendered service during the Lamian War and associated disruption of the Athenian grain supply from the Black Sea through the Hellespont (Engen, 317; cf. Brun, L'orateur Démade, 2000, 148 with n. 80; Black Sea trade: AIUK 4.2 (BM, Decrees of Council and Assembly), no. 12). [3] The precise meaning and significance of the "established price" (i.e. whether it was a price "established" by the market or fixed by the city) is uncertain.
