[1] The "supervisors" (epistatai, l. 5) were public officials with responsibilities for the administration of the sanctuary at Eleusis in the fifth cent. BC and in modified form for a further period from 363/2? (cf. Clinton vol. II, p. 113, cf. p. 3 "after the fourth century we have no certain attestation of the epistatai"). The reference to them here suggests that this may be an Assembly decree (Clinton). The subject matter is intriguing. Perhaps the reference to death (l. 3) is in the context of ensuring the ritual purity of the sacred precincts, unless it is mentioned in relation to succession to priesthoods.
