[1] This kioniskos in the British Museum is part of the Elgin collection (cf. AIUK 4.1, no. 2). On this style of monument see no. 57, with notes. This is the only Botrichos found at Athens; six others men with the name are known from Kos, Arcadia, Beroia, Kyaneia, and Tlos, all Hellenistic in date. Euphanes is also a name found principally in the Hellenistic period, and the lettering of the monument fits such a date. Herakleia produced one of the largest foreign populations in Athens (over 600 are known), and the ethnic is generally taken to refer to Herakleia Pontica, with which Athens had strong links, but the plethora of cities called Herakleia, even by the Classical period, means that we cannot be sure of the origin of each of these residents (a similar problem exists with metics from Antioch, see AIUK 4.6, no. 68).
