[1] Phaleron was a member of the (originally pre-Cleisthenic) association of villages known as the Tetrakomoi. See IG II³ 4, 225 with notes. The komarchs, leaders of the “villages”, are also attested at Lambert, Rationes, F9B 1-22.

In the Cleisthenic system Phaleron, Athens' principal port in the archaic period (Hdt. 5.81, 85 and 6.116), was a sizeable deme (bouleutic quota 9) of the city trittys of Aiantis east of Piraeus (together with distant Rhamnous on the scheme of Traill, Demos and Trittys, 1986, 138; Humphreys, Kinship, 1135, however, continues to regard it as the only deme of its trittys). There are no extant public inscriptions produced by the deme except those associated with the Tetrakomoi. On the deme and its members see Humphreys, 1135-1141. Its most famous member was Demetrios of Phaleron, who controlled Athens in the interests of the Macedonian Kassandros 317-307 BC (see AIUK 2 (BSA), no. 1). On demes in general see RO 46. [2] Like the other dedications by the Tetrakomoi, the base is triangular and there is a cutting for a bronze tripod, the conventional prize of victory. The wording on this dedication is restored on the basis of the similar IG II³ 4, 228. At the end of line 4 there is a sequence of unintelligible letters followed by an erasure.
